EN Who says paper planes belong only in classrooms? Aerospace students from Italy’s University of Pisa and technology creator Jakidale formed Progetto Icarus. On June 25, 2026, at the We Make Future event in Bologna, they launched Icarus, a plane made entirely from paper and glue. Its wingspan was 20.04 meters, its length about seven meters, and its weight about 28.5 kilograms. It set the Guinness World Record for the largest paper aircraft.

EN The previous record, a wingspan of 18.21 meters, was set in 2013 by Germany’s Braunschweig Institute of Technology. The Italian team saw it while studying for exams. A joke that Italians could do better turned into an engineering project.

EN They began with MATLAB simulations, then built a structural test plane called Prometheus, an eight-meter paper-and-glue model called Daedalus, and a four-meter prototype that could glide. Only then did they build Icarus. At the launch, a team member ran along scaffolding and threw the plane. It had to fly at least 15 meters in front of a Guinness adjudicator.

EN Icarus glided through the hangar before landing, like a giant version of a classroom paper plane. Adjudicator Lorenzo Veltri said that watching it travel through the hangar was genuinely moving.

EN A giant paper plane can fail if its structure bends or its balance shifts. Testing different sizes brought the engineering process into paper models: simulate, build, fail, and try to fly again.

EN The run-up and throwing angle also mattered. The person launching it was part of the system. Its steady glide showed that the design had enough strength and the right shape to fly.

EN More than 15 people helped with design, building, and sharing the project. The team said that months of calculations, mistakes, and fresh starts led to that single moment of letting go.

EN Next time you fold a paper plane, think of Icarus, whose wingspan was longer than a bus. A playful idea is not always childish. Sometimes it simply has not grown large enough to need scaffolding yet.

EN An Italian team’s joke about beating a German record became a real Guinness title. Engineering does not always need a serious face. Playfulness and careful calculations can make a whole hangar look up together.

EN The event also had displays of automated robots. Yet this giant sheet of paper made everyone hold their breath. The team’s excitement after receiving its certificate was as lively as the flight itself. Keeping this spirit of play may encourage more people to study aerospace and materials.
